Depp to take singing lessons for Sweeney Todd?

The latest news about Sweeney Todd is that Johnny Depp, still the favourite for the lead role, will reportedly have to take a singing test in order to get the approval from composer Stephen Sondheim. If Depp wins the role, it'll be his sixth collaboration with Burton. You can read more on this story here.

Composer Stephen Sondheim??? What about Danny Elfman, isn't he gonna compose the music??? :(

Yeah if Danny composed the music he wouldn't think Johnny was too 'Rock and roll'. Damn you 76-year-olds!!

Danny Elfman couldn't compose this music because it already exists! This musical was made a long time ago. Yes it's sad to see Elfman split up with Burton. But do you want another Tim Burton and Johnny Depp movie or not?!

Yeah, it's sad to see Danny isn't doing the music this time around.

Johnny having to do a singing test for Stephen Sondiem? Come to think of it, most people don't believe he's a good singer.

He hasn't really had many opportunities in films to sing. he does have a good voice, as people have heard before but I suppose no one actually knows if he could be good enough to sing the Sweeney Todd songs.
Lets hope he is!!

Well Danny and Tim where booked for Believe it or not so they haven't 'split' just happens one project was lost while another already has a score and songs.

Stephen Sondheim.. i wonder if Tim will have a say? i mean his making the film.. who cares what Stephen thinks.. just because he wrote those songs.. its should be in Tims hands now..

I would want to see Danny elfman do it.. he can act, he can sing. perfect opportunity.. now that would be something!!!

Okay, folks. For those of you who don't know, Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd" (music & lyrics by Sondheim, book by Hugh Wheeler) opened on Broadway in 1979 and won 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It is a dark, amazing piece of work, more of an opera than a Broadway show. I think Johnny Depp would be fantastic as Sweeney -- if he can sing the part. The whole musical is difficult, challenging. I wonder who they'll get to place Mrs. Lovett. If you want to know more about Sondheim's original show, go here: http://www.sondheim.com/shows/sweeney_todd/

If you haven't already seen or heard "Sweeney Todd" (and based on some of the comments, I would say many of you have not), just keep your pants on. The piece is absolutely amazing. Stephen Sondheim is perhaps the greatest thing to happen to American musical theatre and this is one of his best works. Collaborating with Burton on this can only be a good thing.

Im a musical director in new york city. That being said, I know my stuff. Some of you are making so many off base remarks, someone suggested that danny elfman compose the score when it already exists, (and in my opinion elfman is too mainstream and has not the talent or the drive to compose a masterpeice like sweeney todd), and some of you were saying Sondheim shouldnt have a say about who the title character is, that it should be in Burtons hands. Well, if you composed a score I assure you that you would want a say, and secondly, its only for Johnny Depps sake that this is happening, can you imagine if he was cast, and hes tone deaf and couldnt sing a note?! He would never work in film again!

I am so dissapointed with their casting choices. I mean, Johnny Depp singing? SWEENY TODD? I don't think anyone knows what a difficult singing part this is. The first guy to play sweeny, a proffessional opera singer blew out his voice not long into the run and had to resign from the play or face never being able to sing again! Now, show me Johnny Depp sing like THAT! And can Helena sing? Well, she sang in Nightmare Before Christmas, and I wasnt impressed. I mean, can she really fill Angely Lasnbury's and Patti LuPone's shoes? And BORAT!?!?!? WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY DOING!?!?! THEY ARE GOING TO BUTCHER SWEENY TODD! (Pun intended) I just...don't know what to say. I'm so dissapointed. I'm gonna see it anyway! LETS HOPE ITS GOOD PEOPLE!

Are you all retarded? HAH! You seriosly thought Danny Elfman could write something as brilliant as Sweeny Todd?
He doesn't even come close to being remotely capable of writing anything as blow-your-ass-off brilliant as Stephen Sondheim. Psh. Danny Elfman...You know nothing. Sweeny Todd is unblelievable. And lets HOPE TO GOD that everyone cast can sing. And who's playing Toby in it?

First of all, ANYONE who knows anything, knows that Elfman doesn't write 75% of "his" music anyway. He has a staff of underlings. He's known in the industry as a hummer, but the arrangements and orchestrations, and yes, many of the melodies aren't even written by him.

Secondly, he is never going to be 1/10th the genius of Sondheim. WHAT MORONS on this blog didn't even know that Sweeney Todd already had music? Are you 12 year old delinquents or something? What is happening to the literacy of America. Evidence of dumbing down is right here on this blog.

These casting choices are an abomination. When musicals transition to the screen, these moronic producers forget that singing is a big part of musicals!

Johnny Depp - WRONG CHOICE. Helena Bonham Carter. WRONG. Sascha Cohen? C'mon folks. This is ludicrous!

Go rent the DVD of Sweeney Todd with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn. These characters are supposed to be older.

Tim Burton ONLY wants to do it because of the makeup, darkness and special effects. Tim Burton is a one-note wonder. ALL OF HIS MOVIES are the same. I loved Beetlejuice and Scissorhands, but how many times can he recycle the same content? If he were truly a genius, there'd be diversity in his works. Using Depp and Elfman repeatedly is proof that Burton can't think outside the box. He simply doesn't have the chops. Could he have directed "Saving Private Ryan"? I doubt it.

Silly, silly person. Danny Elfman writes all of his own music in a sequencer (Digital Performer I think) and then, like every other composer in Hollywood (including John Williams and David Arnold) uses an orchestrator to make his composition a little more orchestra friendly (adding phrasing and cresc. marks were Elfman has put expression changes). He known by no one in the industry as the hummer, with the exception of snobs who don't like that someone with no musical training is better than them. I'm sure that Elfman will be involved in the film as music supervisor and presumably providing score for any dialogue scenes that are added.

Also, perhaps a Tim Burton fan site isn't the best place to rage against Tim Burton. I'm sure he couldn't have directed 'Saving Private Ryan' as Spielberg did, just as I'm sure that Spielberg couldn't have directed 'Nightmare Before Christmas' the same. They are both completely different stylistically. And if you'll notice Spielberg has used the previously mentioned John Williams on all but one of his films ("The Color Purple") and has used Tom Hanks and Liam Neeson on multiple films (Tom Hanks has been in three). No serious person could ever say Spielberg "can't think outside the box" just as no serious person could say that of Burton.

As far as Sweeney Todd goes, anyone can learn to sing. And obviously make up can be used to make actors seem older.

Well, the person above me said it all.

I have nothing more to say that they haven't already said (thank you) but--I'm probably more excited than I should be to be getting the opportunity to hear Johnny Depp sing.

Ever since I found out it WASN'T him in "Cry-Baby" I've been dying to hear him. I hope he gets the part; Johnny has been in several bands, but I don't know if he sung, or just played guitar.

I'm sure he WILL get the part, though. He's an amazing actor, and he must have SOME musical talent in terms of singing if Tim Burton is considering him, and has been for quite some time, as I hear it.

And, like the someone else said, most anyone (I might be excluded, though XD) can be taught to sing.

I hope beyond belief that Johnny's a good singer, so that I -and millions of other fans- aren't disappointed at all.

That is so not true. Not everyone can learn to sing. Ever seen 'American Idol'?

I am rather interested in seeing how Alan Rickman turns out as Judge Turpin - he can certainly play nasty characters, but playing the Judge requires something more. He is not just a nasty character; he is a foul, disgusting character. As a viewer, you should be absolutely revolted with the Judge's antics by the end. He goes far deeper than just 'nasty'.

Does Alan Rickman have what it takes? Hopefully - it's a great part, especially the duet with Sweeney in 'Pretty Women'.
